The tour ends here

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

That’s it for the La Jolla photo tour! I hope you’ve enjoyed this cybervisit to my beloved San Diego. Now it’s time to say goodbye. *sniff* I’ve got a killer revision to do on Shark Island (my editor was not a fan of the Big Mis, ouch), so I’ll be blogging [...]

Torrey Pines State Beach

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Windansea Beach is in south La Jolla, while Torrey Pines State Beach sits at its northernmost tip. Torrey Pines sounds more mysterious to me (like Twin Peaks), so I used it a lot while I was writing Crash Into Me. Taking fictional liberties, I suppose.
These photos are from August of 2008. A [...]

La Jolla Cove

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

We went to La Jolla Cove to see the seals and take pictures for my photo tour on a cool, sunny day in January. The chilly water temps didn’t stop this guy from snorkeling:

See him?

I tried to get some action surfing shots, but I didn’t know how to zoom (duh) and I wasn’t great [...]

Rain at Windansea

Friday, February 20th, 2009

It doesn’t rain often in San Diego, but it was raining the day I went to Windansea Beach in La Jolla to take pictures for my photo tour.

Windansea Beach is mentioned a lot in Crash Into Me. Ben Fortune, pro surfer and tortured widower, lives here in a multimillion-dollar beachfront property with his troubled [...]

Black’s Beach

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Black’s Beach in La Jolla, California, is known for two things: waves and nudity. I’ve only been there once, and I wasn’t aware of its reputation at the time. I didn’t see any dangly bits, either! Just two dudes with clothes on along an otherwise deserted stretch of sand.
I’ll have [...]

Wetsuits

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

In California, most surfers wear their wetsuits year-round. Water temps rarely climb above 70 in the summer, and often drop to the low 50s in winter.

While I was writing CRASH INTO ME, I learned quite a bit about wetsuits. Styles, fabrics, lengths, thicknesses. I won’t bore you with all the details. [...]

Surfer Stereotypes

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Check out my interview with the lovely Katiebabs at Babbling about Books. There’s a giveaway.
Before I started writing CRASH INTO ME, I didn’t know sports heroes were less popular than Navy SEALs and Greek Tycoons in romance. I DID realize that Jeff Spicoli, Sean Penn’s classic interpretation of a stoned-out surfer in Fast [...]

Beach Boys

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

I’m guest blogging at Yankee Romance Reviewers! Leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of CRASH INTO ME.

Did you know that the Beach Boys mention La Jolla, the setting for CRASH INTO ME, in Surfin’ USA? Check it out:
If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody’d be surfin’
Like Californi-a
You’d seem [...]

La Jolla

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

La Jolla is often referred to as “the jewel,” although no one agrees on the origin of the name. Joya is Spanish for jewel, pronounced the same way (hoya). Some believe it’s derived from a LuiseNo word for “the hole,” because of this cave:

Arguably misspelled, often mispronounced, La Jolla is still called the [...]
